Biosand Filter

Bio Sand Filter is an appropriate technology device that is simple, in-expensive and 99% effective at removing disease-causing micro organisms (pathogens) from water.  It can make water safe for human consumption from a whole range of water sources; borehole, dug well, rainwater harvester, vendor-provided water, tanker truck water and surface water (river, stream, spring, dam, lake, pond, canal etc).  As a Point -of- Use (POU) device, a household can produce up to 80 litres of enough safe water for their use daily.

Several studies have been done to estimate the health impact of using Bio Sand Filter.  Overall, these studies estimate a 30% – 61% reduction in diarrhoea among all age groups, including children under the age of five (an especially vulnerable population), from using a Bio Sand Filter (Sobsey, 2007; Stauber, 2007; Aiken et al., 2011; Stauber et al., 2011).

Bio Sand Filter is also a great behavioural change device that strengthens water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) enlightenment campaigns.

Water contaminated with pathogens is the second biggest killer of children around the world.  More than 4,500 children die every day from pathogens that cause diarrhoea and other diseases.  As well, almost half of all people in developing countries are sick at any given time from illnesses that are caused by poor drinking water and lack of proper sanitation (UNDP, 2006).

A recent joint progress report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) indicated that Nigeria is among countries lagging behind with more than 12 million, six hundred thousand Nigerian households still lacking access to safe and clean water.  This lack of progress has very significant impact on our Nation’s overall productivity and well being!

CMADI, aided by the Foundation for Partnership Initiative in the Niger Delta has to date, deployed about 500 Bio Sand Filters in households across Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Lagos and FCT (Abuja).
