World Environment Day 2016 #WED2016

The Community Girl Project had two of her girls participate in the 2016 World Environment Day celebration organised by Partnership Initiative in the Niger Delta (PIND), Egbokodo Itsekiri, Warri, Delta State.

The two representatives from the community girl project were Miss Miriam and Miss Becky from Ifie Community.

The girls learnt about vertical farming, household plants and climate change.

Vertical farming is the practice of producing food in vertically stacked layers, vertically inclined surfaces and/or integrated in other structures. Vertical farming is practised when there is inadequate land especially due to the effect of urban migration and climate change effects.

Some of the benefits of vertical farming are:

  1. They are totally organic
  2. The system is closed and protected
  3. It accommodates any type of vegetable e.g bitter leaf
  4. Lesser amount of water needed
  5. Smaller carbon footprint
  6. No spoilage by reason of food transit
  7. The maximisation of space
  8. The maximisation of farming.

Household plants are indoor plants intended to purify the airspace inside facilities.

Some benefits of household plants are:

  1. They fight indoor pollution (phytoremediation)
  2. They fight against colds in the building
  3. They enhance (cognitive function)

They participated in a waste sorting sensitisation exercise of market women in Ubeji community on the same day as part of the celebration.
